The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln has been appointed to a prestigious national role by HEFCE (the Higher Education Funding Council for England).
Following a rigorous application and selection process, Professor Jayne Mitchell has been made a Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessor.
She is one of 80 academics and students, selected from over 1,200 applicants from across the UK, on a list of assessors published by HEFCE, and one of only two from Lincolnshire.
The Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil, Vice Chancellor of BGU, said it is excellent news for the Deputy Vice Chancellor and the university as a whole.
“I would like to congratulate Jayne on her appointment which is in recognition of her expertise in the areas of learning, teaching and quality.
“We will benefit from her being a part of a national network of experts and we also share in the prestige of such a high-profile appointment.”
The TEF was introduced by the Government to recognise and reward excellent learning and teaching and is being introduced using a phased approach.
Higher education providers, who meet the eligibility criteria, are invited to apply for a Teaching Excellence Framework rating and will be evaluated on the quality of teaching and the outcomes they achieve for their students – taking into account factors such as student satisfaction, employment outcomes and retention rates.
After the providers are assessed, their award ratings (‘Bronze’, ‘Silver’ or ‘Gold’) will be published so that applicants have clear information about where teaching is outstanding, allowing them to make better choices about where they choose to study.
As an assessor Professor Mitchell will be responsible for evaluating applications from across the UK and making recommendations to a separate TEF panel who will confirm the final ratings.
Professor Mitchell commented “I am very much looking forward to the role. I am delighted to be able to make a contribution to identifying, and raising awareness of the excellent teaching and learning taking place in the diverse range of UK higher education institutions.”
Applications for the TEF will close at noon on 26th January 2017. Following the assessment process, results of the exercise will be released by HEFCE in May 2017. For more information see the HEFCE TEF website.
