Routes Into Teaching

To be a teacher you need to have a degree and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You can gain these at the same time through a degree that includes recommendation for QTS or you can complete your degree first and then follow it with a PGCE.

Many teachers then continue to study towards a Masters degree (MA) in Education as part of their professional development.

Undergraduate Routes

If you don’t already have a degree but are confident in wanting to teach in the primary age range, you should consider our BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS. At the end of the course there is an opportunity to take the first steps towards the MA before you start your first teaching job.

If you are currently working in a school employed or volunteering, and you wish to train to teach primary as you work, you should consider our Foundation Degree in Professional Studies routes, followed by a top-up route BA (Hons) Primary Teaching Studies with QTS. If you already have a suitable foundation degree you may be eligible to apply directly for the progression route.

Postgraduate Routes

The most common route to teaching for graduates is the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) which is an integrated academic and professional programme for teaching,  with recommendation for QTS. This is available for general primary teaching and for a range of primary and secondary subject specialisms.

There are several modes of study for a PGCE including full-time or part-time, BGU-based or cluster-based (known as School Direct), salaried or fees-funded. All routes include substantial time training in schools, just like a teacher, with some time spent in training sessions at BGU.
